Get to Know the BC Greens

Let us introduce ourselves!

First of all, thanks for your interest in the Green Party of BC.

We are a different kind of political party. We intend to win seats in the BC legislature in 2013, but we are not obsessed with power. Our goal is to effect change in BC - to help create a sustainable, vibrant, community-based economy that respects the land we live on, the other species with whom we share the planet, and the generations yet to come. We think a Green Party government would be great for BC, but we won’t sacrifice our principles to get into power.

Are we one-issue party?

Since our founding in 1983 as the first Green Party in North America, we have developed a range of thoughtful policies that cover the spectrum of public issues. Yet for some reason, the media like to pigeon-hole us as a “one-issue party”.  It’s true, we care deeply about the environment, because let’s face it, the environment is our home. The environment is also the source of all economic wealth, so we need to take care of our “home” and pass it safe and secure to those who will follow us. We think it is wise to take our short and long term effects on the environment into account in every action we take as  communities, governments, corporations and as individuals.

Do you think we’re “left wing”?

We don’t think we are.  While we do believe that everyone deserves a decent income and that we have a responsibility to care for one another, we differ from the left in several significant ways. We believe there is a role for a strong government that looks out for the interests of society as a whole, and especially the disadvantaged, however we don’t believe that it’s up to governments to solve every problem. We believe in personal, community and corporate responsibility also. Unlike the left, and even our current BC government, we are fiscally conservative and very frugal financially. We believe in balanced budgets and paying down debt, because just as with the health of the planet as a whole, we don’t think it is fair or responsible to take more than our share and burden future generations with our debt.
