Greening the economy is the way to a secure present and future
Since our founding in 1983 as the first Green Party in North America, we have developed a range of thoughtful policies that cover the spectrum of public issues. While some see us as an environmental party and we care deeply about the environment, our strength is our take on the economy and social justice. The environment is the source of all economic wealth so we need to be wise stewards of our natural resources as a source of prosperity for all British Columbians. We need to take care of our “home” and to pass it safe and secure to those who will follow us. We think it is wise to take our short and long term effects on the environment into account in every action we take as communities, governments, corporations and as individuals.
The Green Party of BC is part of the Global Green movement. Green Parties around the world, while independent of each other, share common values as expressed in the Charter of the Global Greens.
10 Core Principles
In addition to sharing the common values of the Charter of the Global Greens the Green Party of BC has 10 core principles that guide our policies and our actions.
Leader Jane Sterk
Jane Sterk has led the Green Party of BC since October, 2007. Under her leadership, the party achieved 8.3% of the popular vote in the May 2009 provincial election. She has also worked hard on strengthening internal Party structure, implementing disciplined financial controls and retiring the Party’s long-term debt.
Organization
The Provincial Council is the governing body of the Green Party of British Columbia (GPBC). We believe in participatory and grassroots democracy and welcome all members whether new or old to get involved. Members in good standing may apply to provincial council to fill a vacancy between annual general meetings, and may run for any position up for election at each AGM. Most positions are held for 2 years with staggered renewal dates so that there is continuity on the council from year to year. If you are interested in joining the leadership team of the Green Party of BC, please contact chair@greenparty.bc.ca. Members are also encourage to help organize at the local level to build Green support in their community.
