Am I wasting my vote by voting for the Green Party?
Definitely not! Voting for what you believe in is never a wasted vote! Every vote for the Green Party sends a very strong message to the other parties. Polls have indicated that 40 to 50% of British Columbians have voted Green or would consider voting Green in the future. If everyone who believes we can make a better world turned up and voted Green, we would elect MLAs. And we will elect Green MLAs in 2013!
Don't you guys just split the vote and allow the Liberals to get elected?
The BC Greens draw support from across the "political spectrum" and much of our support comes from people who would never vote for either of the other 2 main parties in BC. Given the highly polarized politics of BC, we provide a sane, forward thinking, third option for voters in BC who see us as their only choice. We make democracy a bit healthier in BC!
What can I do to help the Green Party?
There are many ways to help the Green Party to succeed and become more influential, and to elect MLAs. We could use your volunteer time, with specific skills you may have or general tasks needing to be done. We could really use your financial support. We are working to expand and improve our policies on a wide range of topics, so please feel free to contribute policy ideas which are in line with our 10 core values. Please visit the Get Involved section of the website to sign up for any of these ways to help the Green Party.
What is the difference between the Green Party and the NDP?
There are really so many differences between the BC Green Party and the BC NDP that we are always surprised when people say we are the same. The first thing to do is to look at the financial reports of the two parties. You’ll see that the NDP is funded by and therefore beholden to big labour. That’s one key difference between the two parties; BC Greens would not let special interests dictate our policy or behavior. Another difference between us and all other parties is that we have a set of core principles (the Global Green Principles) and everything we do must align itself with those values. We also believe we must learn to live within our means, financial, social and ecological. The NDP added $20 billion to the provincial debt while they were in office, the same amount the BC Liberals will add by the next election.
Won't we all be living in caves if you guys get to be the government?
Definitely NOT! Green Parties around the world are electing members to legislatures, especially where proportional voting systems are in place, and have participated in coalition governments in several countries, and in all of these countries, Greens have made positive, forward thinking contributions to civil life. The whole point of the industrial revolution was supposed to be so that humans could work less, and live productive lives doing more of the things that interest them. We believe it is important to get back to working less, producing and consuming less junk, and spending more time doing the things we love, while living a comfortable, but sustainable lifestyle.
