History

The BC Green Party is an ecologically based political party, one which believes in community based democracy, the preservation of social and biological diversity, and living within our means. The BC Greens are part of an international network of Green Parties. Global Greens held their first international assembly in Niamey, Niger in January 1995.

  • January 1983, the BC Green Party is founded, the first Green Party in North America
  • February 1983, the BC Green Party is registered as both a political party and a society
  • May 1983, BC Greens field four candidates in their first provincial election, lead by Adriane Carr
  • 1986, BC Greens enter their second provincial election
  • 1990, Greens begin to participate in civic elections – Phil Millerd elected councillor Lions Bay*
  • Early 1990s, a Green is elected as a trustee to the Golden School Board*
  • November 1996 civic elections, Greens elected in Port Alberni and Duncan*
  • 1991, participate in their third provincial election, field 42 candidates
  • 1993, 21-year old Stuart Parker is elected leader
  • 1996 provincial election, Greens run 71 candidates (out of a possible 75), lead by Stuart Parker
  • 1999, Green Party candidate elected to Victoria City Council and the Vancouver Parks Board
  • 2000, Adriane Carr elected leader

  • 2001 provincial election, Greens field 72 candidates (out of a possible 77) under the leadership of Adriane Carr
  • 2002 civic election, Andrea Reimer, Vancouver Green Party candidate elected as trustee for the Vancouver School Board
  • 2005 provincial election, Greens run candidates in all 79 ridings under leader Adriane Carr
  • 2005 civic elections, Victoria Green Party candidate Sonya Chandler is elected councillor; well known Greens Jane Sterk* and Andy Shadrack* elected in Esquimalt and the Kootenays
  • November, 2006, Adriane Carr steps down as party leader
  • October 22, 2007, Jane Sterk elected leader
  • 2008 local government elections, Victoria Green Sonya Chandler re-elected to Victoria Council, as is first time councillor Philippe Lucas; Vancouver Green Stuart Mackinnon elected to the Vancouver Parks Board
  • May 2009 provincial election, Green Party fields a full slate of 85 candidates under the leadership of Jane Sterk
