More than ever, BC needs democratic reform
Change is good. In the case of our system of democracy in BC, some change would be really good. We are using an ancient voting system, which has progressed very little in 150+ years of BC history. Voter discontent has never been stronger, and voter turnouts are falling with each election.
Frankly, our democracy is in deep trouble, and we need to do something about it. We can’t keep using the same old methods and expect a different outcome. Our system is giving us the poor government we have and so the system, not just the party in power, needs to change.
The Green Party proposes substantial changes that would deliver these results:
- More transparency in how political parties are funded
- Ending the influence of special interest groups in BC politics
- Making it easier for citizens to stand for election as MLAs
- Election results that more accurately reflect the will of everyone who votes
- Reducing the toxic environment in the legislature and requiring a more cooperative effort amongst MLAs of all parties
- More freedom of information around the decisions of government
