BC Greens say Pride week is an opportunity to celebrate diversity

Greens toast the LGBTQ Community on the start of Vancouver Pride Week

July 26, 2010, Victoria, BC –– “BC Greens are looking forward to marching in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer community at this year’s Pride Parade on August 1,” said Green Party of BC Leader Jane Sterk. “BC Greens were the first party to call for same sex marriage and we continue to advocate for inclusion, acceptance and tolerance of sexual minorities in BC and around the world.

“Respect for Diversity, Social Justice, Gender Equality and Non-Violence are four of the Green Party’s 10 Core Principles. Greens celebrate the biological diversity of the earth and the cultural, sexual, and spiritual diversity of the human race. We look forward to the day when every British Columbian is able to fulfill their potential regardless of gender, race, country of origin, or sexual identity.

“BC Greens believe that the ethics of cooperation and understanding must replace the values of domination and control. We call for proactive solutions to reduce the prejudice and discrimination that continues to plague the LGBTQ community despite the progress that has been made.

“Public awareness through education, support for the arts and stronger social programs will help address the issues of sexual diversity and assist in curbing discrimination based on sexual orientation. While it is important to protect this community, a tough on crime approach is divisive and ineffective.

“Our philosophy is that those most affected by a problem must have the authority to solve it. We will work with our LGBTQ community to join with other oppressed communities to develop solutions that will allow everyone to overcome barriers that stand in way of acceptance and inclusion. We are proud to be part of the Pride festivities in Vancouver and we march in solidarity with minorities around the world and show our pride,” concluded Sterk.
