Federal Government decides it’s not be legally required to maintain moratorium but it is morally bound to do so
BC Greens call on the BC Liberal government to do the right thing and tell the Conservatives that BC’s coast off bounds to tanker traffic and offshore drilling
June 3, 2010, Vancouver, BC –– “The collusion and deceptiveness of the BC Liberal and the federal Conservative governments in wanting to open up our coastal waters to drilling and tankers is astonishing given the Deep Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Green Party of BC Leader Jane Sterk. “We know that both the BC Liberals and the federal Conservatives want the Enbridge pipeline to proceed despite the opposition of most British Columbians, all coastal First Nations and most of the First Nations along the pipeline route.
“The conclusion by the Government of Canada that it is not legally bound to maintain the moratorium on oil drilling off BC’s coast and that there is no ban on oil-tanker traffic is profoundly disturbing. It proves that these governments are out of touch with the expectations of British Columbians.
“It seems extraordinary that this interpretation would come out as the world watches the terrible destruction of the Gulf Coast because of the out of control offshore well. It would suggest that the government doesn’t appreciate the ramifications of this catastrophe or even more cynically, doesn’t care. What we now know conclusively is that offshore oil drilling is not safe and accidents will happen.
“The BC Liberals need to stand up for the only morally and scientifically defensible position and that is to tell the federal government that the moratorium must be made permanent. And they need to withdraw their support for the Enbridge pipeline. The tide has changed. People understand we can’t let industry destroy our environment. This is the time to stand up and be counted and do the right thing and the Green Party of BC is asking Premier Campbell to intervene with Prime Minister Harper and Environment Minister Prentice and demand the moratorium be made permanent,” concluded Sterk.
