Green Party of BC Leader to “Paddle for the Peace”

Leader’s plans include meetings with Local Governments and Chambers of Commerce

July 2, 2010, Victoria, BC –– Jane Sterk, Leader of the Green Party of BC is traveling to Fort St John for Paddle for the Peace. During this trip Dr. Sterk will be visiting the communities of Kamloops, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Dawson Creek, Fort St John, Prince George, Smithers, Prince Rupert and Port Hardy. Meetings with Mayors and Councillors have been arranged in the majority of cities and towns being visited. Dr. Sterk will also be meeting with many of the local Chambers of Commerce to find out what they feel is needed for the economic prosperity of the regions they represent.

“We believe it is important to get out into the communities and hear from the people that live there. Hearing what they have to say about the needs of their community will help us better shape our policy to reflect those needs and provide appropriate solutions,” commented Sterk.

The Green Party of BC is opposed to Site C and is proud to take part with in the Paddle for the Peace and the people of the Peace as they protest against Site C.

“I attended a “consultation” two years ago and the whole process around Site C felt like a set up. I asked the BC Hydro reps if they had ever asked the people of the Peace whether they wanted Site C, yes or no. They had not. Instead they asked people what kind of amenities could make up for the destruction,” noted Sterk.

The Green Party of BC believes that we must meet our energy needs first through conservation and then by diversifying to clean and renewable energy which we define as solar, wind, wave and geothermal. BC Greens believe we must preserve our remaining wild rivers and the farmland, beauty and ecological values of the area that would be destroyed by the Site C dam.
